2002 Roadtrek 190 Versatile - 5/26/22 - Old Sealant Removed From Rear Windows

Post by kurtfranz »

Removed all of the old sealer from the rear passenger windows. Took about a couple of hours to do it. I used a small chisel and slowly worked around the perimeter to get it off. I used a flat razor blade the clean the glass. I also removed the weatherstrip which was in poor condition and was not sealing against the glass. I need to source a replacement for that as well as the tape or glue for the side brackets. Since the top hinges are still attached, I am going to apply a 2 inch wide strip of black Gorilla Tape across the top and bottom pieces of glass. That should look good and will prevent the window from falling out in case the hinge lets loose.

Then I wiped them down with Acetone and touched it up with some Rustoleum Black Semi Gloss paint:

Purchased and installed new weatherstripping and attempted to use 3M Weatherstrip Tape (Not VHB Rated) to attach the side brackets on the passenger side window. This proved to be a failure but I figured I would try it since I had the tape on hand. At first it seemed to hold, but once the pressure was applied to tighten the window down the tape gave way.

Here is what it looked like initially when I thought it would work - looked good:

This is the Weatherstrip I purchased at Lowe's:

Next attempt will be using 3M VHB Tape made for glass to metal adhesion.
